Neck Liposuction
Excess fatty deposits in the chin and neck may give the appearance of being overweight. This unwanted fat may be gently removed by vacuum suction through very small incisions placed in hidden locations. This procedure is most successful in individuals that have good skin tone to the neck, allowing the skin to pull up nicely after fat removal. The most remarkable aspect of this procedure is the amount of improvement that sometimes can be achieved with such limited incisions.
How does liposuction work?
Liposuction of the chin and neck region works in two ways: volume reduction and tissue tightening. Using a very small tube inserted under the skin, suction is used to gently remove the excess fatty tissues of the neck. After the fat has been removed, a few days of compression (pressure) dressings allows the skin to 'shrink' and redrape to the new contour of the neck. The healing process that occurs under the skin following neck liposuction assists in tightening of the skin and underlying tissues.
The ideal candidate for neck liposuction is someone who has excess fat in the neck or chin but has relatively good skin tone. With good skin tone, when the fat is removed, there is a better likelihood that the skin will contract and redrape to the new contour of the neck.

What procedures may be combined with neck liposuction?
Neck liposuction may be combined with any other facial or neck procedure. This includes face and neck lift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and laser resurfacing. One of the most pleasing combinations is that of neck liposuction with chin augmentation which can produce a dramatic improvement of the profile. Fatty tissue removed from the neck can also be used for lip augmentation.

What is a 'weekend neck lift'?
This is a combination of neck liposuction and tightening of neck muscles using a small incision under the chin. This procedure is ideal for individuals with excess fatty deposits in the neck and reduced skin tone. Although the tightening of the neck is not as dramatic as with a face and neck lift, because no skin is removed, there is no need for incisions around the ears. The recovery time is generally quick, and many of our patients can return to work or social activities in 2-3 days.

What type of anesthesia is used?
We use "twilight anesthesia" which is a new and innovative method of anesthesia for facial plastic surgery. Twilight anesthesia is extremely safe compared to the standard general anesthesia techniques used today. The main advantages of twilight anesthesia are: (i) it does not require putting a breathing tube in the throat, (ii) it does not require a breathing machine, (iii) the recovery is much faster, (iv) there is much less "hang-over" from anesthesia, (v) and there is much less nausea. All these elements translate into greater comfort and safety. Dr. Naficy has used this technique of anesthesia in several thousand plastic surgery procedures without any anesthetic complications.
During twilight anesthesia a small flexible IV (intravenous) needle is placed into one of the veins of the back of the hand. Through this IV line, relaxing medication is given to make you fall sleep. The amount of medication given is adjusted to the specific needs of each person. After you are sleeping, some numbing medicine (tumescent anesthetic) is also placed in the fatty tissues of the neck to numb the area that is being operated on. The beauty of twilight anesthesia is that during the procedure you are unaware of anything going on and cannot hear anything, yet you are still breathing on your own.
When the procedure is finished, the relaxing medication is discontinued and you begin to wake up. Because the medications used in twilight anesthesia clear the system rather quickly, most of our patients are able to go home in less than 15 minutes after the procedure is completed.
In certain instances, neck liposuction may be performed under local anesthesia. The main advantage of local anesthesia is that patients may also be able to drive themselves home after the procedure.

What is the recovery like?
A pressure dressing is worn around the neck for 1 day. After that dressing is removed, a lighter elastic dressing is worn for a few more days. There is usually little discomfort, and most of our patients are able to return to work in 2-3 days. Swelling is quite minimal and the bruising can be very minimal. Although such a short recovery period is not typical, the pictures below show a patient before and only one day after neck liposuction!
